Club History

Instituted 1898 affiliated 1912

Golf can be traced back to before 1897 in Youghal when "There is no regular club in Youghal, but a course has been laid out by the residents and is free to all comers. It stretches along the sea shore on a soil eminently suitable for the game", according to the "Sportsman's Holiday Guide", 1897.

The "Irish Times" on the 22nd October, 1898, records "A meeting was held in the Town Hall, Youghal, last Thursday evening for the purpose of forming a golf club, suitable links having been found close to the railway station and overlooking Youghal Bay. In the absence of the Earl of Shannon, the chair was taken by Mr. H. F. Allen, J. P., and a committee was appointed to carry out the objects of the club. The Rt. Hon. Earl of Shannon was appointed President. His Excellency, Sir Henry Blake, Vice President, Mr. S. Sealy Allen, Hon. Secretary, and Mr. A. B. Gravey, Hon. Treasurer".

A match against Little Island is recorded in "The Irish Times" on the 21st April, 1900. It would appear the club went into decline, and revived again in 1911 and the club re-affiliated to the GUI in 1940.
